Chuck Brown (August 22, 1936 – May 16, 2012) was a guitarist and singer who is affectionately called “the Godfather of Go-go”. Go-go is a subgenre of funk music developed in and around Washington, D.C. in the mid- and late-1970s. While its musical classification, influences, and origins are debated, Brown is regarded as the fundamental force behind the creation of go-go music.
Contents

Brown’s musical career began in the 1960s playing guitar with Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm, joining Los Latinos in 1965. At the time of his death he was still performing music today and was well known in the Washington, DC area. Brown’s early hits include “I Need Some Money” and “Bustin’ Loose”. “Bustin’ Loose” has been adopted by the Washington Nationals baseball team as its home run celebration song, and was interpolated by Nelly for his 2002 number one hit “Hot in Herre.” Brown also recorded go-go covers of early jazz and blues songs, such as “Go-Go Swing” Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing If Ain’t Got That Swing”, “Moody’s Mood for Love”, Johnny Mercer’s “Midnight Sun”, Louis Jordan’s “Run Joe”, and T-Bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday”.
He influenced other go-go bands such as Big G and The Backyard Band, Rare Essence, Experience Unlimited (EU), Little Benny and the Masters, and Trouble Funk.
The song “Ashley’s Roachclip” from the Soul Searchers’ 1974 album Salt of the Earth contains a famous drum break, sampled countless times in various other tracks.[2]
In the mid-1990s, he performed the theme music of Fox’s sitcom The Sinbad Show which later aired on The Family Channel and Disney Channel.
Since the early 1970s, Brown exclusively played a blonde Gibson ES-335, affectionately referred to as his “Blondie.”[1]

Personal life

Brown resided in Brandywine, Maryland. He had 2 sons, Wiley and Nekos Brown. Wiley is[when?] a musician and football player at Virginia Tech. His son, Nekos, was a defensive end/linebacker for the Virginia Tech football team. While his son[which?] was in college, Brown scheduled concerts and other appearances around the Hokies home schedule to ensure that he would never miss a game, and became a fixture at Lane Stadium. Following the Virginia Tech massacre, Brown stated in an interview that he was “absolutely devastated” by the tragedy, and cried every day for two weeks.[3] In shows that followed, Brown would pause for a moment in prayer for the victims and their families before beginning his performance, and dedicated several shows to their memory.

Death

Chuck Brown died on Wednesday, May 16, 2012[4] at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Hospital of multiple organ failure including heart failure or heart problems. He was 75 years old. Several weeks prior to his death, he had postponed and canceled shows due to hospitalization for pneumonia.[4]

Legacy

Brown was considered a local legend in Washington, D.C., and appeared in television advertisements for the Washington Post and other area companies. The D.C. Lottery’s “Rolling Cash 5″ ad campaign features Chuck Brown singing his 2007 song “The Party Roll” in front of various D.C. city landmarks such as Ben’s Chili Bowl.
Brown was the subject of the cover article in The Washington Post Magazine on October 4, 2009, entitled Chuck Brown’s Long Dance.[5] He received his first Grammy Award nomination in 2010 for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals for “Love” (with Jill Scott and Marcus Miller), from the album We Got This.
In 2009, the block of 7th Street in Northwest Washington, DC between Florida Avenue and T Street was renamed “Chuck Brown Way” in his honor.
On September 4, 2011, Brown was honored by the National Symphony Orchestra, as the NSO paid tribute to Legends of Washington Music Labor Day concert – honoring Brown’s music, as well as Duke Ellington and John Philip Sousa – with a free concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol. Brown and his band capped off the evening with a performance.
If you had recently asked me if I was a fan of bluegrass music, the answer would’ve been NO. It’s not that I saw anything offensive about the style of music. I simply never heard any bluegrass offering that held my attention for more than a second or two.

When I was recently invited to shoot a live appearance by The Seldom Scene at The Otter House, I would be lying if I said I couldn’t think of other things that I would rather have done on a (day of the week) night. I agreed to film the show and I am so glad I did! The show was awesome! I was absolutely amazed. I strongly encourage you to check out this video. If you’re a bluegrass fan, you’ll be blown away. If you’re not, you will definitely become a fan of The Seldom Scene.
VideoMann Brown

the following wirte up is from SeldomScene.com

One of the founding members, banjo player BEN ELDRIDGE, has been with The Seldom Scene since its inception, November 2, 1971, and he still performs with the same fire and enthusiasm that characterized the band’s early days as a progressive group that took Bluegrass music to new heights. Ben is also well loved for his scat singing on fan favorite, “Lay Down Sally”. Ben turns 74 years old August 15, 2012.
DUDLEY CONNELL plays a masterful guitar and provides powerful lead vocals for The Scene, which has a reputation for challenging the bounds of Bluegrass; and Connell’s musical virtuosity has pushed the group beyond these bounds. Audiences delight in Connell’s renditions of traditional songs like “Old Train”, folk ballads such as “Blue Diamond Mine”, and blues songs like “Rollin’ and Tumblin’”. Connell is a former member of The Johnson Mountain Boys.
Playing dobro for The Scene is one of the most respected dobro players on the bluegrass circuit today, FRED TRAVERS. He is also an accomplished vocalist who brings solid lead and harmony to The Scene. Travers is a former member of the Gary Ferguson Band and the Paul Adkins Band. Fred is beloved for his tender vocals on Seldom Scene favorite’s Walk Through This World With Me, and From This Moment On.
RONNIE SIMPKINS plays rock-steady bass for the group and provides the bass vocals in The Scene’s quartets as well. Simpkins has been performing Bluegrass music since childhood and is a former member of The Tony Rice Unit. LOU REID, who plays mandolin for The Scene and provides the tenor vocals, is also a former member of Ricky Skaggs Band, Quicksilver, and he currently fronts his own group Carolina. On lead, or when providing harmony, Reid’s vocals are the epitome of the powerful, “high, lonesome” tenor that is the signature of Bluegrass music.

JOHN DUFFEY, former bandleader and beloved character, John passed away December 10, 1996. He was, to many, the greatest tenor voice ever in bluegrass music.

Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center

Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center provides child abuse victims with a child friendly, community oriented, facility-based program in which professionals from multiple agencies come together to address the child’s abuse. Safe Harbor works to address the abuse in such a way that it honors the child’s need for safety, dignity and privacy. Thus reducing the trauma and preventing further victimization of the child.

Child abuse is a complex problem. Professionals in medicine, mental health, Child Protective Services, law enforcement, prosecution, and victim advocacy all may have a role in the process. Suspected victims of child abuse often have to visit each agency separately, recounting their experiences and reliving their trauma over and over again…NOT ANY MORE!
At Safe Harbor THE CHILD IS OUR FIRST PRIORITY
We invite you to join us as we address child abuse and protect our children so that perpetrators are held accountable and children are not further traumatized by the investigative process.

Picnic in the Park is moving back to Hurkamp Park for 2012 with great new performers, children’s activities and lots of fun for all!

Picnic in the Park formerly “Lunch at Hurkamp” started in 1997 and has grown into one of the community’s most popular events. Each concert serves as a meeting place and opportunity for community groups, business people, friends, families, seniors, and preschoolers to gather together and enjoy music, downtown Fredericksburg, and each other. Over 3,000 people attended the Concert Series last year and we expect this year’s series to be more popular than ever!

Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation’s, Picnic in the Park concert series, is a wonderful opportunity for visitors and residents of the Fredericksburg area to savor a beautiful day outdoors while enjoying live, local entertainment in historic downtown.

This year’s series will feature exciting new activities for kids including a moon bounce and art activities.
Also don’t forget Touch-a-Truck! A great hands-on activity to keep children of all ages entertained and learning.

On May 28, 2012, the National Park Service, in conjunction with the congregation of Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) and members of the Fredericksburg-area community, will host a procession from Riverside Park to Fredericksburg National Cemetery. The mile-long procession, which begins at 10:30 a.m., will proceed south along Sophia Street before turning west up Lafayette Boulevard. Civil War re-enactors representing the 23rd United States Colored Troops will lead the 2012 march.

The procession to the cemetery recreates a march made in 1871 by white and black citizens that culminated in the first multi-racial Memorial Day program ever held in the town. Like the 1871 event, this year’s march will conclude at Fredericksburg National Cemetery in time for participants to take part in the cemetery’s 12 p.m. Memorial Day exercises. Shiloh Baptist Church’s pastor, the Reverend Lawrence A. Davies, will deliver the keynote address at that program. Both the procession and the Memorial Day program are free to the public.
